TO: All current and past participants in the Bayfield 3000 Soapbox Racer Classic
All current and past sponsors in the Bayfield 3000 Soapbox Racer Classic
It is Springtime and time to start thinking about racing again for 2010.
As you all know, the race will be in its 5th year at Dove Ranch subdivision hosted by the HOA and Brad Elder. Each year the race has drawn a variety of sponsors (we couldn’t do it without you) and maintained between 13 to19 drivers with improvements being made every year. Our team felt that this last year went very well since we changed the rules to one car for one driver, which helped speed up the race. We also placed a “rebuild” crew at the base of the hill to get many of you back on the road. There were really great gifts for both drivers and spectators and again wonderful support from the food vendors and bands.
I know many of you look forward to the race and either building a new car or rebuilding old ones. We’ve had more phone calls from those interested in participating this year.
As many of you may be aware, it is becoming more difficult to hold the race at Dove Ranch. The growth of the subdivision with more building on the main road leads to safety issues for both drivers and spectators. It has also been difficult to maintain a consistent title sponsor.
Barbara Johnson, co-coordinator of the race has had to resign this year. Gary Franzen will continue in his role as coordinator, but needs someone to step up and help.
However, Gary has been busy and currently has 2 offers on the table for the next Racer Classic. The first being from Al Harper, owner of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. He is interested in sponsoring IF we can find a suitable location and get the City of Durango on board. It would be held the weekend of “Railroad Days” in August.
Next, Durango Mountain Resort is possibly interested in holding the race over Labor Day during their annual car show on a road currently being re-paved.
Gary is looking for your feedback on these offers. He also needs to know if anyone is interested in helping organize and coordinate the race for 2010. Please contact Gary at gary.theateam@rocketmail.com with your comments. We need your help to commit to holding the Racer Classic for 2010!!
