Durango, the jewel of Southwest Colorado
Perched on the banks of one of our last wild rivers, the town of Durango is located at the southern end of the magnificent, glacier carved Animas Valley. Durango was founded by the Denver and Rio Grande railroad in 1880 to serve the mining communities of Southwest Colorado.
Today the town is a thriving destination for tourists and sports enthusiasts. Approximately 200,000 people a year make their way to Durango to ride "the train". Many more come to enjoy the outdoor sports, from the Iron Horse Classic, the oldest bicycle road race in America, to the Animas River Whitewater Festival. Other activities include: mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing,
